Shirley Wenrich

Shirley Wenrich by her Daughter, Jane Ali

My mom was 68 years old when she passed away.  She had breast cancer in 1992.  She had a mastectomy and chemo.  She had a hard time with the chemo. I remember when she lost her hair and how devastated she was.  She didn’t want anyone to see her bald.

Eleven years later she started losing weight and couldn’t figure out why.  The cancer was back and this time it was in her colon.  She had surgery and started chemo again.  She did 2 treatments then her heart gave out.  I remember sitting in the hospital with the doctors and they were telling us “there is nothing else we can do for your mom.”  I couldn’t believe it was happening.

She loved going to her grandchildren’s sports events and she would go in her wheelchair.  I’m so glad she got to go to as many as she did.  I know she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Mom came home from the hospital and had hospice care from April to September, when she passed away.  She was a fighter up until the end.  She couldn’t breathe some nights and I would just sit by her side and pray. My brothers & sisters all took turns taking care of her.  We switched around our hours at work.  My brother flew in from LA and he was with her when she passed along with my son and me.

We miss her so much.  There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of her. When I was told I had cancer all I wanted was my mom but I know she is watching over me and someday we will be together in heaven.
